Meet Sarah Ellison, issue one's cover girl

Posted: 7th May 2015

Say hello to the lovely Sarah Ellison, HomeStyle's very first cover girl. Her home is fit to bursting with inspirational ideas, upcycling hacks and bargain buys - Sarah would give David Dickinson a run for his money on the bargain stakes! You'll have to pick up a back issue of issue one to see the full feature, but here's a little sneak preview to enjoy.

My home
'My personal style is quite relaxed and is a mishmash of a variety of periods and finishes. I am not a slave to a particular style; instead, I pick pieces I love and put them together. And I tend to focus on neutral essentials, such as wall and floor finishes, and adding interest and texture through soft furnishings, art and lighting.

'I’ve learned not to be afraid to use what I already have and mix it in with new pieces. For this house, we had a very limited budget and had to make use of any hand-me-downs, some were revamped with a paint finish or re-upholstery and some were incorporated as is. The vast majority of fixtures and fittings, from the sink, to fridge and cooker, are reclaimed. It is a bit of a gamble but generally pays off!'

'When shopping for my home, I scour eBay, junk and charity shops for my homewares, then add in low-end high street basics with investment pieces, such as lighting. That’s my one indulgence – I cannot over-estimate the importance of great lighting.'

My photoshoot
'It was fun! I enjoyed inputting into the shots and working with the team, but I didn’t feel like I needed to be there constantly – I was still able to leave them to it and get on with my jobs for the day.'

'I really enjoyed coming up with ideas for the shots and helping style the scenes. When it came to having my own photo taken, I’ve never been a big fan… It always feels a bit uncomfortable! However, Charlotte (HomeStyle’s editor) was wonderful and helped me feel at ease.'

'For future HomeStyle cover girls, my advice is to be flexible about what is required (for instance, being available to pose for photos) and be prepared to have things moved around. Oh, and make sure your home is as clean and tidy as possible!'
