By using her love of colour and style, Helen Henton has turned her garden into an outdoor space that's part of her home
A bit about me
I’m Helen Henton, a maternity care nurse. I live with my husband John, an electrician and two of our daughters, in Hampshire.
My problem garden
The garden was a great size and perfect for our family, but it was unloved and neglected by the previous owners. The fences either side were falling down, there was just a little wire fence at the end, and a rotten shed that was held up by all the junk inside it. The whole garden desperately needed some love.
How I made it work
First on the list was to replace and rebuild the fence along one side and at the end of the garden. We quickly discovered that our left-hand corner was a sun trap so set about making a decked area up there and built up plants in front to make it more enclosed and not overlooked. We then slowly added the bar and decked area.
My favourite part
I love the chillout area at the bottom of the garden as we can spend all day up there in the summer months. It’s great for entertaining friends on warm summer evenings.
