How Anouk Skurek transformed the problem spare room

Homework is now fun for Anouk Skurek’s children thanks to a revamp of the family’s spare room and the creation of personalised workstations

A bit about me

I’m Anouk Skurek and I live in a three-bedroom cottage in Cheltenham with my husband, Steve, and our children, Harvey, 13 and Lulu, who’s 10.

My problem spare room

I don’t think the room had been redecorated for 30 or so years. The walls were mint green, there were pink velvet curtains and the floor was covered in a brown patterned carpet. When we updated the house, this room was almost forgotten.

How I made it work

After stripping several layers of wallpaper, we painted the walls, ceiling and woodwork white. We replaced the brown carpet with a grey one and added thick underlay for extra comfort. Curtains were swapped for a white insulating blind and we covered the windowsill with faux sheepskin and bright cushions. We painted two walls blue and hung shelves and coat hooks to give the kids storage for homework and school bags.

My favourite part

I love the blue walls and the contrast they create with the white furniture. The colour inspired me to go bright with some accessories and I now feel brave enough to use darker shades elsewhere in the house.
