Utilise your awkward areas

Utilise your awkward areas

Posted 1st Mar 2017

No home's perfect – from the kooky alcoves and randomly placed windows, to the oddly-shaped hallways and plain weird layouts (whose idea was it to use the kitchen as a walkway to the bathroom?), we've seen our fair share of funny looking and seriously strange spaces, but that needn't mean those areas should go unused. We're big believers in utilising every inch of space possible, that’s why we caught up with quirky homewares store, Red Candy, to get some tips on how to use those unconventional nooks…

The New Year is fast approaching, along with the infamous list of resolutions and DIY projects. But before you think about breaking the bank on a shiny new bathroom, why not spruce up an area of the home which you've previously overlooked?

Areas like the under-the-stairs cupboard are often put to the back of the DIY project queue as they are seen as more functional than spaces to be enjoyed. But it’s these very areas that no one usually pays much attention to that have the biggest wow factor potential!

The under-the-stairs cupboard

If your under-the-stairs cupboard has become a proverbial dumping ground for old footwear, empty boxes for items which have long since been thrown away, and so much other miscellaneous paraphernalia that even the pre-wizarding Harry Potter would have rather slept in the garden, then it’s the perfect place to start your new year's revamping mission!

It can still be a storage area, but why not turn the storage units into an eye-catching feature? Add some fun to the space with shelves painted in colour pop hues, or cover your old storage boxes in colourful wrapping paper. And don't forget to add some fun decorative features: make the most of the tall sloping ceiling by displaying a big feature pendant light!

And it doesn’t even have to be a cupboard! Lots of under-stair areas are overlooked when they could be turned into a stylish desk area or a cosy reading corner. These little nooks are a unique chance to show off your personality through your home décor!

The utility room

The beauty of the utility room is that no-one expects this room to be stylish, so it's a chance to really surprise your visitors! This infamous eyesore of a room usually consists of a washing machine, dryer, plus a mishmash of spare kitchen rolls and tins of baked beans. But even if your utility room does look like a rather hurried attempt to stock up for an oncoming apocalypse, then fear not - you can completely transform it with a few simple but effective touches!

Exploit existing features to give this often overlooked area a theme! For example, if you have exposed brickwork and metal pipes, they are the perfect starting points for creating an industrial style space. And with mixed materials (such as pairing copper with brass) being a hot trend this winter, your utility room could quickly become the most trendy room in your house! Plus the juxtaposition of the plastic washing machine with a rustic backdrop will make for an interesting feature which is bound to set your guests’ tongues wagging!

The tropical style has also been taking the interiors world by storm this year, and it is still going strong. How about adding some bold and bright pineapple pattern wallpaper, or placing some cacti on spare shelf areas to cheer up your chores with some exotic island style?

The hallway

Another zone which lacks some zing is the hallway! The entrance hall, staircase and landing area might essentially be a corridor leading to more exciting rooms, but what many people often forget is that the hallway is the first impression guests will have of your home. Your hallway is an opportunity to create a warm and welcoming environment for your visitors to marvel at, and also show off your personality for all to see!

Why not create a feature wall with a bold focal point such as a large wall clock or a stunning piece of modern wall art? Or you could reintroduce family photos to the staircase in a funky way: instead of those clichéd stuffy wooden frames, how about a contemporary collage of bright and colourful frames of different sizes?

And don't underestimate the power of a lick of paint! Sprucing up your walls (or even a wooden staircase) with a vibrant colour will add light to your hallway, instantly creating a more welcoming environment. Plus a mirror will also add extra light to proceedings!

A fresh start

Reimagining a previously neglected area of the house is a brilliant excuse to have a sort out for the new year whilst making some funky and unexpected touches to your home at the same time! It's a great way of turning the idea of the clichéd designated “messy room” on its head, whilst further stamping your personality on your home style!

Turning a room which everyone expects to be boring into a surprising treat will give your home a completely unique and original edge! We all want our home décor to stand out and make our visitors say "WOW - I want that in my house", and that's why we think that pesky under-the-stairs cupboard should be top of your 2017 DIY list!
