Melissa Billen is not afraid of colour. In the top-to-bottom revamp of her three-bedroom home, she threw bright, bold shades into every corner – and she did it with flair. Downstairs, there’s the pink walls in the kitchen, a lemon yellow dining area and azure blue garden room, then following the magenta hallway to the first floor, the burnt orange guest bedroom comes into view, with a cyan master and matching children’s room alongside. Melissa’s home is a true masterclass in colourful decor, and we celebrated it in all its technicolour glory over eight pages in issue one of HomeStyle. To give you a taster, here’s her home’s vital statistics, plus a few shopping hints and tips.
'I’m Melissa Billen and I live with my husband David Pannell, son Sacha, aged 13, and our labrador Flo in a three-bedroom 1960s house in Suffolk.'
'Our home had been well cared for, but it was a very simple building, with just one electrical point in every room and one pendant light. We’ve always wanted to create our own home, so we built an extension and opened up the rooms. This brought the property into the 21st century and made the most of the wonderfully calming river views.'
'My bedroom is my favourite bit of our home – I can drink a cup of tea in bed and look straight out onto the river.'
'My favourite shop is Designers Guild. I love Tricia Guild’s bold use of colour and how she puts it all together in her designs. And I just love Houzz for interior design ideas.'
'I would whole-heartedly recommend the furniture designer and maker Nick Harvey. His company, Gerard Lewis Designs, made all of the bespoke joinery for me.'
