The campaign helping children grow their own food

Posted 19th Apr 2016

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched which is aiming to help 125,000 school pupils to grow their own food.

The campaign, launched by Cornwall based organic food business Rocket Gardens, is aiming to raise £50,000 as part of an innovative project that will see 125,000 school children growing their own organic veg this year.

Schools, businesses and individuals who have signed up to #schoolvegpledge, will be helping Rocket Gardens sow, grow and deliver Instant School Veg Gardens to schools dotted across the UK.

A Rocket Gardens Instant School Veg Garden will be bursting with seasonal organic baby vegetable plants that are ready to pop straight into the ground or pots and containers, and are suitable for both schools based in an inner city or the rural hamlet.

Every £100 raised will result in Rocket Gardens sending one school a Spring garden followed by an Autumn garden later on, meaning pupils can enjoy growing their own food all year round. Gardens will also include support for teachers, including growing guides, lesson plans, recipe ideas and top tips.

Founder of Rocket Gardens, Mike Kitchen, said: "I love seeing the pleasure my four children get from growing and harvesting fresh vegetables, and I passionately believe it’s vital to teach all children how to grow their own food. They are excited to eat healthy food when they’ve grown it themselves and also learn that vegetables don’t need to be covered with pesticides or wrapped in masses of packaging. It’s also brilliant to see children learning there is more to veg than just peas and carrots, as our veg gardens offer an exciting array of flavours some children may never have experienced before, such as beetroot and pak choi."

Rocket Gardens are also offering rewards to those who make a #schoolvegpledge. If you pledge £30, you will receive your own Mini Veg Garden which will be packed full of tasty treats including summer salads. If you pledge £100 you will get a Gourmet Veg Garden and an Instant School Veg Garden for a school of your choice. And if you pledge £500 you will become th eproud owner of the Ultimate Rocket Garden, an Instant School Veg Garden for a school of your choice, plus an invitation for you and give guests to enjoy a free camping holiday on Rocket Farm in Cornwall!
