Having set her heart on a freshly plastered wall colour, Laurie Davidson set about creating a new dining scheme around it

A bit about me

Hi, I’m Laurie Davidson, a writer and stylist. I live with my boyfriend Wayne in a three-bed, 1930s, semi-detached house in Surrey.

My problem dining room

This room was really dark, as it’s a through room between the hall and kitchen, and although it has patio doors, they are really old and not particularly attractive. We’d painted the room a dark blue-grey colour when we initially moved in, but after living with it for a while I knew it needed to go lighter. The space also used to have an old electric fireplace with a tiled surround, but we replaced it for a log burner.

How I made it work

We went for a much lighter colour palette to freshen it up, with a muddy pink shade for some of the walls, and fresh white on the others. We chose flooring to match what we had elsewhere in the house, so it felt more cohesive, and bought a sideboard for storage.

My favourite part

The plaster pink wall colour, I love it! It’s not to everyone’s taste but it reminds me of traditional Moroccan schemes.
