Emily Martin has used her love of Scandi style to create a light-filled living room with plenty of seasonal touches

A bit about me

Hi, I’m Emily Martin and I live with my two sons in a semi-detached three-bedroom house in Godalming, Surrey.

My problem living room

When I first moved into the house it was a mess and hadn’t been updated since the 1930s. I stripped off the wallpaper and painted it, then got rid of the brown carpet. I also had a false wall installed to house the TV and a fire. It was a quick fix, and I always knew I’d need to turn my attention to it at some point.

How I made it work

I took up the cheap grey carpet and put down grey laminate flooring instead to match the rest of the house. I chose Scandi-style accessories and furnishings to keep it light and modern but it was painting the walls that really made all the difference – it’s amazing what a lick of paint can do!

My favourite part

I love the bookcase from Maisons du Monde as I can show off all my little treasures and books, but it also has small cupboards for storage, which is handy for less attractive items.
