Choosing second-hand units and appliances meant Andrea Atkins could stretch out her budget

A bit about me

Hi, I’m Andrea Atkins, and I’m a partner at Crayon Architects, along with my husband Dan. We live in a Victorian two-bedroom flat in Plymouth.

My problem kitchen

The kitchen was tiny and in complete disrepair. It had been blocked in by a wall which meant it was very small and unpleasant to be in, and there was nowhere to put a dining table.

How I made it work

We knocked through to make an open-plan space, replaced the floor and fitted a pre-owned kitchen and new breakfast bar. Then we painted the room with a nod to vibrant retro colours.

My favourite part

I love the window seat that we made. Filling in the bay was an obvious choice to gain an extra seating area and the storage is really useful. It’s also nice to have a comfy seat in the kitchen since we don’t have space for a sofa. Not to mention, the views outside and across the park are lovely and when we have friends round everyone congregates there.
