Despite her husband’s misgivings, Ellie O’Mahoney has transformed her dated bathroom with individual touches

A bit about me

I’m Ellie O’Mahoney, a journalist. I live with my husband, Mark, and our two children, in a Victorian terrace in south east London.

My problem bathroom

The bathroom we inherited was a real mishmash, with a worn out wooden floor, a toilet with a rotten wooden lid, a flimsy bath screen, a shower that barely worked and some strange ceiling lights which looked like they belonged in a kitchen.

How I made it work

The bath itself was great as was the side panel, and the sink was fine and in keeping with the age of the house. Knowing I could keep them meant there was a budget for a new shower, toilet and plenty of paint. And I could utilise Mark’s considerable DIY skills!

My favourite part

I absolutely love the dark walls and the panelling, they cocoon the room and make it feel comfy and relaxing. It’s not a huge bathroom, but I made a decision to be really bold with the colour.
