Research released by Aldi has found that nearly one in five (19 per cent) Brits think dodgy decor is one of the biggest turn-offs when viewing houses
The survey revealed quick upgrades can make a real difference for 34 per cent of home buyers, who consider stylish furnishings will make them more likely to buy.
72 per cent considered the kitchen to be the most important room during a viewing. On the flip side, dark rooms were the biggest turn off (50 per cent), followed by awkward layouts (36 per cent) and overgrown gardens (32 per cent).
It's only after seven viewings that sellers will think about making changes to their home in an attempt to sell it, while in a desperation move, owners will splash out an average of £900 to make a sale.
The survey prompted Aldi to challenge home interiors star Anna Ryder Richardson to look for ways to add value to their property, while sticking to a budget of £300, and only using the Aldi Kirkton House interiors range.
Three local estate agents ended up evaluating the three bedroom, semi-detached home in Dartford, Kent, both before and after the makeover, with the simple process of decluttering, rearranging the furniture and adding some stylist interior accessories having a powerful impact. In fact, it lead to an increase of up to £10,000 across each valuation.

Commenting on it, Anna Ryder Richardson, said: "We spent a third of what home buyers think they need to spend and increased the property’s value by an average of over £8k! It’s easy to invest a small amount and make a big difference."

1. Make sure the space is clearly defined in each room. A beautiful woven rug is a great way of indicating how a room should be used and, in the process, brightens up a space in an easy step.
2. Create a spacious looking room, which is both appealing and homely. You need to consider the layout of your room, and think about whether it feels welcoming when you walk in.
3. For house viewers, the kitchen is the crucial part. Just make sure there are no dirty plates left in the sink! It’s also worth setting up the table so viewers will be able to envisage what the home actually looks like.

4. Consider the overall interior design in your house - if you have items on display that don't match the decor, it could be worth taking a few down, as it will help you achieve a slicker look.
5. First impressions count - that's where the hallway comes in. Place a welcome mat down and tidy up any shoes that are lying around.
6. Make sure you're making the most of your outdoor space - that's where bright colours come in. Colourful, patterned cushions and garden dining ware all play a part in bringing a garden to life, particularly when used against the more organic backdrop of green grass and bright flowers.
