Let's face it - a seriously stained or damaged floor is always going to be a source of irritation

And it's something that's plaguing many Brits, with two thirds of families saying they have just that - and it's been caused by clumsy children, the study found.

The poll investigated exactly what is damaging our homes, with items like pasta sauce, blackcurrant squash and slime all leaving a mark on our homes.

Kids are most likely to cause havoc when they're between new-born and three, with some parents even confessing that certain stains had been caused by the contents of their child's nappy.

Children knocking over their drinks proved to be the main culprit, followed up by ink and paint.

It subsequently wasn't surprising that three in 10 said it was liquids that were the worst thing for children to spill, followed by cosmetics and foods.

20 per cent of parents have had to pay £200 to get their flooring repaired or professionally cleaned, with one even saying they had a bill of £3,000 to repair the damage.

Unsurprisingly, it was the carpet that is most likely to get stained the most.

The room that is most commonly ruined is the bedroom, as it was found 39 per cent of spillages will happen there. Hot on the heels here is the dining room and kitchen, highlighting the issue of food.

Carine Jessamine of Selco Builders Warehouse, which conducted the research, said: "The research shows parents everywhere have to deal with serious spillages."

"Everyone accepts children are going to have incidents when they are growing up, but when the repair bill can drift into the thousands it can prove costly for parents".
