12 tasks to carry out around the home this autumn

Posted 24th Sep 2018 by Peter Byrne

With the evenings drawing in, it feels like the perfect time to take on those jobs we put off doing during those leisurely summer months - hurrah, we hear you say!

So, what tasks do we have in mind? Well, the team at PromotionalCodes.org.uk have compiled of the ones you must try out this autumn...

1. Mow the lawn

Okay, so this first one might be an outdoor task, but still. The last thing you want to greet you every time you open your back door is an overgrown, shabby lawn. Therefore, make sure you give it one last good cut. It may need the odd trim over the winter months, but it won't need doing as often as it did during the summer.

2. Clean the oven

If you're in all night, what could be a better time to give your oven a clean? There are several household oven products you can use to make this an easier process. Be sure to let the grills soak and give the inside of the oven a good scrub - just have a look in your supermarket and see what you can find.

3. Deep clean the house

This is like a spring clean – it’s just carried out in autumn. Get those cobwebs, wipe the skirting boards and clean the cupboards – leave no corner untouched. It takes effort, but you'll be glad you've done this when you have a spotless house.

4. Clean the fireplace

If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace, why not give it a bit of a clean before you put it to use? To do this, simply line the area with newspaper and remove any loose ashes and dust with a shovel and broom. You can use a wire brush to get rid of soot from the brick and then use baking soda and warm water to remove remaining soot and dust it off.

5. Make your own autumn pot pourri

You can make a homemade autumn pot pourri with oranges, juniper berries, cinnamon, vanilla and rosehip - you can find simple recipes online for this. When they're placed in a bowl, they make an excellent table piece or ornament, while providing a long-lasting scent.

6. Get rid of it

This is your chance to have a good sort out. Any clothes you've been hoarding, and the food that you're not going to eat can be thrown away. Any food that's in date but not wanted should go to a food bank, while unwanted clothes in a good condition should go to a clothes bank, which can normally be found in supermarket car parks.

7. Candles

Without a doubt one of the best ways to set the atmosphere for a relaxing night in is a candle. With an array of scented, long-lasting candles, there's guaranteed to be one to suit every mood.

8. Cushions and throws

Why not treat yourself to some snuggly cushions and throws? They're a sure way to make your sofa and bed a cosier prospect. Simply curl up under a throw for a great way to keep warm, particularly if you're looking to leave the heating off for as long as you can and save some money too.

9. Indulge in a new bedspread

You should try to switch things up every now and then - and one way to completely change the look of your room will be getting a new bed spread. It's a simple way to give your room an injection of life, ideal if you're tired of the same sheets each night.

10. Treat yourself to some new curtains

Another simple way to change the look of a room will be changing the curtains - it can help to insulate your room if you have thicker blinds or curtains during the autumn month, and also helps to prep the house for better heat insulation as autumn turns into winter too.

11. Lick of paint

You can't buy new bedding for every room - if you're looking to brighten up your room, paint could be the answer. You’ll spend more time indoors during the colder months, so it makes sense to have a wall that you like the look of.

12. Find something good to watch

Few things beat spending an autumnal evening spent curled up on the sofa with a good TV show to watch.
