Living 'off-grid'

The heating experts at Calor discuss rural energy options…

If you currently live in or are moving to one of the four million UK homes not connected to the mains gas network, you’ll have to consider which fuel source you use to heat your home and provide hot water.

Although this can seem like a hassle, there is a clever solution that offers all the convenience of being on mains gas – LPG.

The clever choice

LPG is fast becoming the choice of fuel for those living off-grid, and can be used for heating and hot water, gas fires, gas cooking, and even appliances such as tumble dryers.

It’s the cleanest and greenest of all off-grid fossil fuels and is also incredibly efficient, with modern condensing LPG boilers capable of achieving efficiencies of 90 per cent and more.

Automatic top-up technology is available on LPG tanks, monitoring gas levels and alerting the supplier when a delivery is required, meaning there’s no need to check fuel levels or re-order.

Most LPG suppliers, such as Calor, own the LPG storage tank, and for a small monthly charge, will insure and maintain the tank, so you don’t need to worry about its upkeep. As an added bonus, LPG is virtually impossible to steal, which is a real plus in rural areas where oil theft can be a major concern.

Compact solution

Unlike oil tanks which are only sited above ground, there are a range of storage options available with LPG. There’s the above ground tank, which is suitable for most homes; alternatively, you can opt for an underground tank, which doesn’t take up valuable garden space. Or, if you’re short of outside space or have lower heating needs, there’s the Calor Compact.

A new and unique offering from Calor, the Compact is made up of four gas bottles, neatly contained in a secure protective housing unit. The Calor Compact really is a space saver, as it can be tidily tucked away against your property, making it suitable for almost any home.

Best of all, you also get the added reliability and reassurance of automatic gas delivery with Calor’s clever top-up technology. This monitors your gas level and lets them know when the bottles need changing – they will then come and swap the empty ones for new ones – it really is hassle-free.

You also don’t need to worry about the disruption of switching from another fuel supply either, as in most cases, the Calor Compact can be installed in a few hours.
